Some of our Favorite Works for Concert Band
Thursday, May 25th at 7pm
SOU Music Recital Hall
South Mountain Ave, Ashland
Southern Oregon Concert Band’s season closing concert features some of the band members’ favorite
works for concert band.
The program will open with Emperata Overture by Claude T. Smith a prolific composer of concert band
works in the mid 1900s. Included on the program is the perennial favorite, Ralph Vaugh Williams’ Folk
Song Suite for Military Band; also included is a favorite Spanish March Amparita Roca by Jamie Texidor.
Other marches on the program are; Sousa’s Foshay Tower Washington Memorial March and W. Paris
Chambers’ Chicago Tribune March. No “favorites” band concert would be complete without something
from Musical Theater and the Big Band Charts; filling those roles are Robert Russell Bennett’s selections
from My Fair Lady and Warren Barker’s In the Miller Mood. Rounding out the program is a lyrical and
moving arrangement of Shenandoah by Frank Ticheli.
Sharing the podium for this concert are Don Bieghler and Dr. Martin Behnke.
Don Bieghler taught band for 30 years in the Central Point School District, at Scenic Middle School and
Crater High School, retiring in 1997. In 1998 he began his tenure as the director of the Ashland City
Band, a position he still holds. Don also played with the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra from 1970-
1997 and was a founding member of the Rogue Valley Symphonic Band.
Dr. Behnke is retired from Willamette University Department of Music where he was Director of Bands
and Department Chair. After moving to the Rogue Valley Dr. Behnke directed the jazz ensembles and
taught applied Jazz piano at SOU from 2006-2012.
